How to Protect Rhododendrons in Winter Gardener’s Path

Even on misty or snowy days in winter, the garden is an accessible woodland retreat that features early blooming rhododendrons and companion plants, such as Hellebores and Winter Hazels. Winter is also a fantastic time to visit our Rutherford Conservatory, which is home to tropical rhododendrons known as vireyas that are native to Southeastern.

Rhododendrons are beautiful, large flowering shrubs. These shrubs are acid-loving, and versatile in your gardens due to the many varieties available, and the wide array of colors the flowers bloom in. Once these shrubs are established in your garden, they are relatively low maintenance.

Cold and wind can cause rhododendrons to lose water. Symptoms on rhododendron often include yellow, beige, brown or purplish foliage and leaf margins that are curled or rolled. Severe or prolonged desiccation will result in dead twigs and buds; however, many specimens can recover if the winter is not too severe.

WInter burn commonly occurs on rhododendrons that are receiving too much sunlight in the winter, or are getting hit with too much wind. Both of these are drying to any plant. Applying an anti-desiccant can help to prevent the loss of water through the leaves. This would need to be applied in the fall, and again as the label of the product.

Mar 29, 2021 Original: May 20, 2014 Winter did a number on my rhododendrons, which I did not wrap. There are brown, curled leaves and some stem ends appear dead. Should I cut these all off, or what else can I do to improve the shrubs' look? Answer: Exposure to harsh sun and wind in winter can cause dry, brown, curled leaves and/or branches.

Here are a few of my favorite Rhododendrons for winter interest: ' Goldflimmer' or 'President Roosevelt' - Two variegated beauties with very different flowers. I am a purple fanatic, so 'Goldflimmer', with its warm purple flowers, is my favorite of the two. It gets to 4-5', takes full sun to part shade on the coast, and is great.
